Fixed-date culinary retreat

Casa Lawa’s culinary retreat at Palazzo Daniele was a real, limited event held May 22–25, 2026 in Gagliano del Capo, Puglia. It brought the creative food-and-community spirit of Casa Lawa, whose own base is in Sicily, to an art-filled boutique hotel in Salento. Those dates have passed. I wouldn’t present the original event as available to book today, but its combination of local producers, hands-on cooking and time together makes an excellent starting point for a personalized four-day Salento stay.

This sample is for travelers who enjoy food, design, small-group hospitality and coastal southern Italy rather than a tour covering every famous village in Puglia. The route uses three nights in the same hotel and focuses on the area around Gagliano del Capo and Santa Maria di Leuca. Workshops in the example are activities to arrange separately, not guaranteed inclusions from the former Casa Lawa event.

How to plan the route

Choose Palazzo Daniele as the three-night base for an art-and-food-led escape near the southern tip of Salento. Arrive through Brindisi or another convenient airport or train gateway, arrange a car or driver, and spend the next two full days around local cooking traditions and the coast. Day 4 is the return journey, with an optional brief stop if the departure is late.

The original retreat was organized by Design Hotels, Casa Lawa and Fora, with group meals and artisan experiences. An independent stay in the same region will not reproduce that organized program unless a new official retreat is announced or compatible private hosts confirm their availability. That distinction matters when selecting the hotel and arranging experiences.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in southern Salento and settle into Palazzo Daniele

Travel from the relevant airport or rail station toward Gagliano del Capo. Check into Palazzo Daniele, a former aristocratic residence with preserved architectural details and contemporary art. Give yourself time to explore the hotel, courtyard and village streets rather than arranging a long tour immediately after the transfer. A relaxed dinner is a good way to establish the slower pace of the stay, whether at the hotel or a venue the local team recommends.

Planning note: Gagliano del Capo is not central Lecce. Brindisi Airport is a useful gateway, but the drive south must be allowed for and a rental car or driver should be planned in advance.

Day 2: Local cheese and produce, with a proper culinary host

Arrange a private or small-group experience with a verified Salento food producer or cooking instructor. Traditional fresh cheeses such as ricotta or primo sale can be a worthwhile focus, but only if the host is prepared to provide a safe, meaningful demonstration or class. Add a producer visit or an appropriately paced lunch and leave the rest of the afternoon open for village exploring or enjoying the hotel’s garden. A communal dinner can capture the spirit of the former Casa Lawa gathering without claiming to be its official program.

Planning note: The 2026 retreat included cheese-focused masterclasses. This itinerary suggests independently booking a new experience, not using a ticket for a past event. Confirm the instructor, group size, ingredients and transportation first.

Day 3: Santa Maria di Leuca and a coastal afternoon

Explore the coastline around Santa Maria di Leuca or the nearby Ciolo area with a local driver or rental car, depending on conditions. Choose scenic viewpoints, time beside the water and a coastal lunch rather than racing up the entire Adriatic coast toward Otranto. Return to Gagliano del Capo for an afternoon pasta-making experience with a qualified host if it has been booked, or enjoy a slow evening at the hotel instead. A simple pasta al pomodoro session can be more memorable than a complicated multi-course production.

Planning note: The swimming season and boat conditions vary. Don’t assume a yacht, boat excursion or culinary class is available without a separate reservation and a suitable weather plan.

Day 4: Breakfast, a final local stop and departure

Enjoy breakfast and check out with enough time for the drive back to Brindisi, Lecce or the onward station. If the flight is later in the day, a small craft stop or relaxed lunch may fit, but there is no reason to invent one more distant attraction. The point of this escape is time around a distinctive hotel, its community and food traditions. A comfortable return is worth protecting.

Planning note: Confirm the exact departure city before choosing the fourth day’s stop. Getting all the way back to Bari takes considerably more time than a short transfer within southern Salento.

Where to stay

This four-day example is anchored to Palazzo Daniele; the other hotels below are alternative ways to experience Salento, not venues where the Casa Lawa collaboration took place. Each changes the route and would require rearranging the daily transfers.

  • Palazzo Daniele, Gagliano del Capo: The original retreat setting, an art-focused boutique hotel with a historic palazzo atmosphere, courtyard and pool. Choose this if the property’s design and the original event’s spirit are the reasons for the trip. Confirm the actual room configuration and on-site dining plans.
  • Patria Palace, Lecce: An alternative for travelers who want a historic city base, more walkable evening dining and easy access to Lecce’s architecture. Staying here would turn Gagliano del Capo into a separate excursion rather than a neighborhood outing.
  • La Fiermontina, Lecce: A contemporary, art-oriented hotel alternative with a different experience from the remote southern village. It makes sense when galleries and the city are bigger priorities than the original retreat location.

I’d select Palazzo Daniele for all three nights if your purpose is a close interpretation of the Casa Lawa retreat. Its location rewards a driver for distant activities, and a room choice should account for stairs, the layout of a historic building and whether you want more time in the hotel. If most evenings will be spent in Lecce, choose a Lecce hotel and revise the route rather than commute far every night.

Meals and dining stops

The original gathering revolved around food, but it’s better to design dining around today’s available hosts rather than promise the same chefs or menus from May 2026. I’d build in one special hotel dinner, one hands-on cooking session and flexible meals with local producers.

  • Palazzo Daniele Kitchen: The hotel’s food program emphasizes Salento ingredients and seasonal cooking. Confirm the current dinner format, operating days and whether reservations are needed.
  • A local cheesemaker: Have a reputable local experience provider arrange a demonstration or tasting centered on fresh regional cheeses, with the host and location confirmed before booking.
  • Pasta al pomodoro workshop: Look for a real cooking instructor or private chef who can host a hands-on lesson for your party. This echoes the original retreat’s theme but is not an included Casa Lawa session.
  • Coastal lunch near Leuca: Choose a restaurant that fits the actual coastal route and current seasonal opening times. A relaxed meal after exploring the shoreline is preferable to a long detour for a famous name.
  • Shared courtyard dinner: Ask the hotel about an appropriate group or private dinner arrangement. Don’t assume a communal retreat dinner is scheduled for guests on ordinary booking dates.

Transportation, reservations and safety

The important distinction is between a past hosted event and a hotel stay that you can independently tailor. Dates, hosts and what is included must be checked separately.

  • Past event: Design Hotels’ original program describes the May 22–25, 2026 retreat. It is historical evidence, not current availability.
  • Casa Lawa itself: Casa Lawa’s retreat calendar can be checked for any new collaborations. A repeat at Palazzo Daniele is not assumed.
  • Hotel identity: Palazzo Daniele’s official site provides current room and property information. Book the hotel separately from any independently arranged culinary workshops.
  • Transport: Gagliano del Capo is at the southern end of Salento. Choose a rental or professional driver based on the airport, luggage and frequency of planned outings.
  • Experience rights and accuracy: Do not market a Casa Lawa-branded workshop without a current agreement. Independent local chef and producer bookings are distinct services.
  • Seasonal operation: Hotel dining, pools, beach clubs and some coastal trips can be seasonal. Verify which services are available for the actual dates.

How to tailor the itinerary

  • Couples: Keep two unstructured afternoons, arrange one private cooking lesson and spend more time around Palazzo Daniele’s art and garden.
  • Groups: Discuss a genuinely bookable private dining or producer program with the hotel and vetted local hosts before inviting participants.
  • Art-first visitors: Stay in Lecce and spend time in galleries and architecture, using the southern coast as a dedicated day trip.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still book the 2026 Casa Lawa retreat?

No. Its May 22–25, 2026 dates have passed. The hotel can be considered for an ordinary stay, and any future Casa Lawa collaboration would need a new confirmed announcement.

Is Casa Lawa a room category at Palazzo Daniele?

No. Casa Lawa is a separate culinary and creative retreat concept founded in Sicily. The 2026 Puglia event was a collaboration held at Palazzo Daniele.

Can you arrange the same cheesemaking and pasta activities?

We can help identify independently bookable local hosts and ask whether the hotel can coordinate similar experiences. That would be a custom program, not a claim of access to the previous retreat’s exact activities.
